British space plane
The British company Reaction Engines Limited (REL) was awarded 1 million euros to develop an air breathing engine that could power the Skylon spaceplane. The engine would run on hydrogen as the fuel and use liquid oxygen as a coolant instead. It would also have a redesigned exhaust nozzle to get more force from the fuel which would increase it’s carrying capacity by 10% if it works. One problem they have to sort out is to make sure that it doesn’t melt or deform the engines. But overall this sounds like a great idea…I wonder why we haven’t tried coming up with this?
